Sparta • Spartans conquered their neighbors and made them slaves (helots) • They developed a strong military to keep them from rebelling • Boys entered military at age 7 • Entered army at age 20, lived in barrack for 10 years, returned home but served in the army until age 60 • Girls trained in sports to be healthy mothers • Oligarchy government with 2 branches • Kept foreigners out and discouraged their people from traveling in order to keep control

During Discussion Notes: • The Persian Empire • Persians were warriors and nomads who lived in Persia, modern day Iran • Cyrus the Great united the Persians (559-530 B.C.) • Largest empire in history at that time • Conquered Mesopotamia, Asia Minor, Syria, Canaan, and Phoenician cities • He showed mercy to his conquered people • He allowed the Jews to return to Jerusalem (chapter 3)
