The Carolinas • King Charles the II granted land to 8 different English Nobles “LORD PROPRIETORS” • The Lord Proprietors 1st set up a government • Governor = William Drummond • Wrote the Fundamental Constitution of Carolina in 1669 • Constitution: Written plan of government for a colony • Some were self made laws by the citizens • Majority of these laws still fell under the rule of the King

  3. Making $$$$$$ • Colonists tried many different cash crops due to good climate and rich soil • After some time, they finally “found out the true way of raising and husking rice” • Rice was one of the main cash crop of S. Carolina • Indigo became the other • Blue Dye • Comes from a plant that is grown

  4. Making $$$$$ continued… • Indigo became important because of a 17 yr old girl • A million lbs of indigo was being sold a year to cloth makers in Europe

  5. Who made these cash crops? • The plantations in S. Carolina required lots of workers • When owners needed more help, they started buying enslaved Africans • What is this the start of????
