  1. Language Language in hypnosis takes advantage of the way we create our internal realities

  2. Create the Story Trance • Personalize • Individual sense language • Individual metaphorical language • Interview to discover what these are.

  3. Indirect Suggestions • If suggestions are too specific, interior reality may not match, which induces anxiety • Permissive language, filled with choice, allows the person to go to that interior space with comfort • There are language structures that contribute to the permissive experience

  4. Indirect Suggestions • The ‘yes’ set. Stating things with which a person agrees, which makes it more likely they will agree to the next suggestion. Related to… • ‘Truisims’. Small stipulated truths with which we don’t’ bother to quarrel: “Sunrise is beautiful, isn’t it?”, you know how to relax, don’t you?

  5. Indirect Language • These help us create conditional statements: “Because you know how to relax, you are more likely to relax now.” • Note that the terms are vague. ‘Nominalizations’ are a form of unspecified nouns. The term refers to verbs or adjectives that are turned into nouns, vague enough that they allow for a person’s own interpretation: a relaxation, a teaching, a distancing.

  6. Vaguaries • ‘People can relax’ (which people not specified). • ‘things can change’ • ‘the situation can get better’ • ‘this is easier than it looks’

  7. Creative Language • In some sense, these are words that allow a person to create a reality, rather than prescribing it for them. • Language patterns that are used: ‘Double Binds’. A suggestion: will you do this now or in a minute. • Tag questions: “isn’t it?” • Embedded Suggestions: YOU find yourself in a woods where there ARE creatures who are ABLE to talk.

  8. Language Patterns • Negative commands: It’s important that you can’t RELAX too soon. • Don’t QUIT SMOKING.
