  1. Primitivity

  2. As you know formal writing requires specific approach. The lexicon acceptable in academia is quite strict. You have to avoid colloquial, non-professional language, as well as primitive language. Primitive language is a combination of unacceptable in academic midst, non-professional, colloquial or simply undesirable terms. While, for example, it is not a mistake to say be in a position to, doctors, come up with — we still recommend you to avoid these and other statements, which are common in colloquial, but uncommon in professional sphere.

  3. Example Be in a position to. • I am not in a position to write this paper. • Therefore, the company would be in a position to continue raising its revenues.

  4. Example On how to. • They offer their opinions and suggestions on how they expect the negotiations to end. • Their insight on how oral readings influence the adaptation of ESL students. • Aflashback on how Agbadi is in love with a haughty and a spirited young girl named Ona. • The company continuously trains its employees on how to best serve customers.

  5. Come up with. • I have to come up with a time management plan for myself. • They were able to come up with only two variables. • The company lives up to this strategy by continuously coming up with new and creative ways to shop, such as having an online store that is easy to access and use.

  6. The same (referring to a noun or a process you have mentioned earlier). • Since the declaration of surrogacy in India as legal in 2002 the business is tremendously thriving with commendable profits from the same. • Independence should be attained to avoid a repeat of the same. • Similar cultural and religious architecture is present in Saudi Arabia, with the two nations influencing each other in these aspects due to their commonality in the same. • Mona Awad allows her readers to gain a better understanding of issues related to obesity as perceived by victims of the same.

  7. No longer the case. • The media informed the public that this was no longer the case.

  8. Once again, we would like to stress that the expressions highlighted in this guide are not typically mistakes. However, we recommend you to replace such statements with more professional, more specific and more formal counterparts. Specify what you are talking about instead of saying 'the same'. Use formal terms like invent, discover, introduce instead of 'come up with'. Replace 'on how to'' with non-wordy statements or simply remove this awkward locution wherever possible. Use cannot, unable, to say not in a position to (or 'can, able to' instead of in a position to). Use professional terms like physician instead of a childish doctor. While definite contexts allow you to say 'this is no longer the case' or 'were no longer in a position to' we still believe that such wordy statements disperse the reader's attention and add unnecessary wordiness to your paper.
