  2. Active vs. Passive Listening • Listening is a SKILL • ACTIVE: a listener is engaged and participates in the communication process by guiding speaker toward common interests • PASSIVE: listener does not share in responsibility of communication process • How can we show we are actively listening?

  3. Listening Spare Time • Speaking rate: 120-180 words per minute • Listen 6 times as fast – Rate Gap

  4. Roadblocks to Listening • Listen 3 times as much as we read • Listening is difficult, but a necessary SKILL!

  5. Roadblocks to Listening Jumping to Conclusions Overreacting to Emotional Words Interrupting • Tuning Out Dull Topics • Faking Attention • Yielding to Distractions • Criticizing Delivery or Physical Appearance

  6. Filters that Distort • Filter: communication passes through personal filters and information is processed and understood based on filters • Filters: • Education # Biases • Attitude # Age • Experience # Emotions • Religion # Family • Physical Condition #Morals

  7. Four Ways to Listen • Appreciative Listening: Most basic, simply listen to enjoy • Critical Listening: Evaluate and determine logic of message • Empathic Listening: Act as a sounding board, encourages speaker to speak freely • Discriminative Listening: Single out one particular sound • Once you remember these you’ve ACED listening skills.
