  3. Mobilizing U.S. Military Power • African Americans, American Indians, Mexican Americans faced segregation & discrimination • Blocked from the marines, limited to kitchen duties in the navy, exclusive units in the army

  4. Mobilizing U.S. Military Power • NAACP helped to open more opportunities • Schools to train officers & assigned to combat duty • No effort to integrate units

  5. Mobilizing U.S. Military Power • Training camps constructed to house & train • Exams, rules, drilling, exercising, shooting, hand-to-hand combat

  6. At War • Troops sailed to France= American Expeditionary Force (AEF) • Gen. John Pershing= commander • Experienced combat officer (MX & Philippines)
