  4. Nationalism (def.) pride in one’s nation • A nation is a similar group of people • A state is a geographic territory controlled by a government • Examples… Uno mas… The Basques are an example of a nation without their own state – they are controlled by Spain and France.

  5. The Balkan “Powder Keg” GER. European nations were competing for control of the Balkans. Countries were concerned about maintaining a Balance of Power. The emergence of Germany (1871) and the decline of the Ottoman Empire threatened the “balance”.
