NICRA • Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association • Irish: Cumann Chearta Sibhialta Thuaiscear Eirann • Organisation which compaigned for civil rights for Roman Catholics in Northern Ireland • during late 1960´s and early 1970´s • was accused by the gouvernment of being a political front for republican and communist ideologies

  3. … • held marches to pressure the gouvernment • wanted the  gouvernment to grant there demands : - extension of the local gouvernment franchise - end of gerrymandering (Manipulierungen, Wahlkreisverschiebungen ) - an end to discrimination in housing and jobs - the disbandment of the B-specials

  4. … • 24.8.1968 : first civil rights march from Coalisland to Dungannon • three days later the DHAC (Derry Housing Action Comitee) organised a protest in Guildhall, Derry • invited NICRA to organise a march in Derry

  5. … • Northern Ireland Home Affairs Minister, William Craig,  chose to ban civil rights marches • demonstrators defied the ban • Were attacked by police ; TV-pictures shocked the world

  6. … • students formed the civil rights organisation People´s Democracy – held marches, too • were attacked at Burntollet bridge by 200 armed protestants • Ireland slid into disorder •  Bloody Sunday (during one march against internments 14 unarmed demonstartors were killed by brit. troops)
