History • The game of basketball was created in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith. • Basketball was originally played with a soccer ball. • Peach baskets were originally used as baskets. Peach baskets were closed, and balls had to be retrieved manually by cutting a small hole in the bottom of the peach basket and poking the ball out using a stick. • In 1906 metal hoops, nets and backboards introduced.
History • In 1906 metal hoops, nets and backboards introduced. • The first official game was played in a YMCA gymnasium in Albany, New York on January 20, 1892 with teams of nine players on the court at one time. The game ended at 1–0. • By 1897–1898 teams of five on the court became standard. • Dribbling was not a part of the original game of basketball. Passing was the primary source of movement.

Fundamental Skills • Passing- The attempt to move a live ball between two teammates. • Types = Bounce, chest, overhead • Dribbling- The skill that allows you to move up and down the court, maneuver past defenders and execute plays. • Types = Cross-over, between the legs, behind the back, reverse (spin) • Shooting- attempt to score points in a game by propelling the ball towards the basket. • Types = Jump Shot, Lay-up
B.E.E.F. • Balance- Feet should width apart, 10 toes facing the basket, knees bent, jump straight up and down. • Eyes- Focus on the a part of the rim. • Elbow- shooting hand at 90 , elbow in not flared, elbow facing the basket, • Follow Through- extend your shooting arm straight in the air and flick your wrist towards the basket. “reaching into a cookie jar” “Shooting out of a phone booth.”
