  4. What is the Climate in Egypt? • In Egypt, it almost never rains • In Egypt, it is hot all day • In Egypt, it is cool at night • The sky is blue all the time • It might never rain • Every day, the sun is out • Sometimes, it is more than 100 degrees

  5. What is Climate, continued • You might never see a rain cloud • Every spring the Nile river floods • Sahara has little rain • Sahara is a type of desert • Sahara has sand storms

  6. What do they wear in Egypt? • Moms make cloth for clothing • Bedouins wear long robes • Robes are made out of cotton or wool • Men wear pants with robes • Women wear dresses with robes

  7. Life as a kid • Family ties are very strong • Kids often grow up near many relatives • Kids must learn at an early age • Both boys and girls go to school together • Boys work in a field when they conplete school • Girls help with the cleaning and cooking

What Holidays Does Egypt Have? • Muslims celebrate three major festivals: Moulid el-Nabi, Eid el-Ahda, and Eid el Fitr • At Moulid el-Nabi, they mark the birth of the Prophet Muhammad and have a big meal. They sell candy dolls. • Eid el-Ahda takes place after their annual pilgrimage to Mecca, which their holy place • Eid el Fitr is celebrated at the end of Ramadan. During Ramadan they fast during the day and only eat after sunset • Horses are decorated for festivals • Festivals take place in tents • Homes are decorated for festivals • Some people have a big meal at home

  9. What Natural Resources Does Egypt Have? • Steel is a natural resource • 40 percent of people work at farms • 20 percent private businesses • 8-11 percent unemployed • Cotton is a natural resource

  10. What National Monuments Does Egypt have? • The Egyptians built pyramids • Egyptians studied the stars and sky • There are tombs in Egypt • Mummies live in pyramids • Powerful reminders of its ancient past • Ancient Egyptian works of art tell a story

  11. What Games and Sports does Egypt Have? • Football is called soccer • There are sports clubs in Egypt • Most sports are expensive for people • the Al Ahla club and the Zamalek club are top soccer teams in Egypt • Like to play polo, squash, basketball, swimming and handball

  13. What Food do they Eat? • Some people eat Greek food • Lunch is their main meal • Felufel are fried balls or chick peas and wheat • Denner is a small meal • Desserts are sweet cakes and puddings • People eat a lot of food in Egypt

  14. Animals • Camels, horses, water buffalos, snakes, lizards rats, mice, bats • Every winter, more than a billion birds fly through Egypt • Birds come from Europe • People have to protect some rare birds

  15. Cairo • Cairo is the capital city of Egypt • At night, the streets of Cairo are filled with people shopping or walking or eating • Visitors often arrive in Cairo

  16. School in Egypt • By the age of 15, kids can read and write • Formal education for kids starts at age 5 • Poor families don’t send their kids to school • Some kids earn money or help their parents in their family business

  17. Population • 82 million people live there • Most people live in cities and villages along the Nile River

  18. Meaning of the Flag • Red means the bloody struggle • Black means the end of oppression • White means hope
