  2. Standards • SS6H5 The student will analyze important contemporary issues in Canada. • a. Describe Quebec’s independence movement. • Essential Questions • Why do some people in Quebec want to be an independent nation? • What has prevented Quebec from being an independent nation? • What changes might occur if Quebec is granted its independence?

  3. Unique Province • Quebec has always been a unique area in Canada. • Influenced by French culture, religion, and language. • French is the official language of Quebec. • Quebec citizens are primarily Catholic.

  4. Ideas of Independence • After WWI, Quebec citizens believed that Canada did not respect their opinion since they did not wish to enter the war. • Many citizens felt that they were more French than Canadian. • Ideas began to spread that Quebec should be a separate country.

  5. Separatist • 1960s: Fearing French culture, language, and Catholicism in Quebec was disappearing, Quebec “Separatist” began trying to secede from Canada. • 1980: The movement for secession failed as Separatists failed to gain enough votes. • 1995: In another vote, Quebec failed to become an independent nation by a small margin. (49.4% to secede/ 50.6% to stay)

Protecting French Culture • Although Quebec failed to gain independence, Canada passed several laws to help citizen’s preserve their language and culture. • Made Canada officially bilingual. • Passed law that guarantees the right to preserve one’s cultural heritage. • French was made the official language of Quebec. English may be used in advertising, but it must be in a smaller size under the French.

Why would it be a good thing for Quebec and Canada? • At least 1 picture to illustrate your point. • If you think Quebec should NOT become it’s own country, you must include: • 3 reasons why Quebec SHOULD NOT secede from Canada. Why would it be a bad thing for Quebec and Canada? • At least 1 picture to illustrate your point.
