  2. Day 1 (of 4):Flags

  3. You have been given a short description of a fictional country your group is going to portray. • Copy the definitions of the difficult words on this page to help you better understand the paragraph.

  4. Nationalism “Deep devotion to one’s nation” - Can be a unifying force within a country - Can also cause intense competition between nations - Nationalists are usually more connected to a nation than they are to a leader or the government.

  5. Diplomacy “When government officials do negotiations (talks / deals) and build relationships (like alliances / treaties) with other nations”

  6. A couple of reminders…

  7. Monarchy King or queen makes government decisions / has control of the country

  8. Democracy The people have power in the government

  9. Agriculture The production of food, fiber and other goods through farming and forestry

  10. Imperialism Extending the power, control or rule by one country over areas outside its borders. The areas so controlled or ruled may be called that country's empire.

  11. Now, use the description on your page to create a flag for your country. • First read the description and come up with a list of symbols that represent this country – You must have at least four! • Decide on colors and a layout pattern. • All people in your group must then draw your flag on poster paper, divide the work! • Finally, your group will present the flag and tell the class about your country

  13. Make sure you look at the map (on WWI Simulation Coversheet) • Sit at your tables according to the map, put your flag up somewhere around this area

  14. Read the “World Situation Summary” as a class.

  15. Use the Confidential Data information sheet, the map, and the first two pages of your “World War I Simulation” information packet to answer thequestions together as a group.

  16. Day 3 (of 4):(1st) State Responses

  17. Make sure you look at the map (on WWI Simulation Coversheet) • Sit at your tables according to the map, put your flag up somewhere around this area

  18. You must choose which role you will play: Minister of State – present first state response Deputy Minister – present final state response Foreign Minister – heads negotiations Negotiating Minister x2 – goes out to others to negotiate

  19. NEWS BULLETINJULY 28, 1918 TO: MINISTERS OF STATEFROM: News ReporterDATELINE: Bahkan

  20. The government of Bahkan has reported that Penlandian nationalists have staged a massive armed attack along her borders. They have taken control of the East River and have bombed government facilities in the capital. It is believed that the raiders are members of the same group which have been staging smaller raids on the Bahkan border in previous months. This action is by far the most serious yet taken by Penland sympathizers. Bahkan officials charge thatthis attack was led by the regular Penlandian Army, and is an act of outright aggression against Bahkan territorial integrity. Government representatives in Penland have refused to comment on the current crisis. This leads to speculation that Bahkan officials are making a legitimate charge. There are also reports that there have been massive troop movements in Penland, both in the direction of Sandia and Yorkton.

  21. Each Minister of State to meet with his/her country and prepare a state paper proposing a solution to the crisis. You should NOT consult with other countries.

  22. Each nation will read their solution aloud to the class. Every person in each country should take notes on various proposals (and then share notes at the end)

  23. After all proposals have been made, countries should review the various suggestions. These should be analyzed in light of your own objectives / plans / goals. (ie. Does this change your nation’s opinion?)

  24. Day 4 (of 4):Final State Responses

  25. Make sure you look at the map (on WWI Simulation Coversheet) • Sit at your tables according to the map, put your flag up somewhere around this area

  26. Based on the proposals from yesterday, review what you wish to negotiate for • Negotiating Minister will use this information as they go out to make compromises, treaties, deals, alliances, etc.

  27. ONE Negotiating Minister may go directly to each country. ONLY ONE MINISTER CAN BE IN A COUNTRY AT ANY GIVEN TIME! • The other ministers will stay at the table and discuss deals with the negotiating ministers from other countries. As you are doing this the Foreign Minister must take notes on each decision/deal made with these countries!

  28. Review all negotiations made with other countries • Now decide what your country’s ultimate action is going to be and write it • The Deputy Minister must copy this response onto an official response form and present it to the class.

  29. Your possible decisions should include: • A declaration of war, • An ultimatum (“you do ____ or we’ll do ____”, • Announcement of support, (military, armaments, non-military supplies) • Non-support, • Neutrality (take no sides), • Build blockade, etc.

  30. (Remember, “Diplomacy” is when government officials do negotiations and build relationships (like alliances / treaties) with other nations”) Debrief

  31. Discuss as a Class (write YOUR ideas down on your own paper) Was war the final solution?What is difficult about diplomacy? Did “self interest” make any solution almost impossible? Try to identify the actual country you were playing.
