Roman Slavery • Slaves were very important to the Romans. Without them, the wealthy of Rome would not have been able to lead the lifestyle that they wanted.
Duties & Punishments • The duties of the slaves in Rome were to help the wealthy of the land live and lead the lifestyle they wanted. • Punishments for the slaves that had done wrong was to be sold, beaten, or killed. • Most of the slaves in Rome learned the hard way.
Slave Owners • Slave owners mostly consisted of the higher of the middle class and the wealthy of Rome. • A wealthy man of Rome could own up to 500 slaves at his disposal. • A emperor could own at LEAST 20,000 slaves also at his disposal.
Who Were Typically Slaves? • The typical slaves in Rome were the under class men. • Also if a slave married and had children, the children were automatically slaves. But most parents would sooner kill their own children then have them become slaves and lead no sort of healthy lifestyle. • The only way a slave could be released is by the master consent or if the freedom was bought for them by money they would make. This was highly impossible considering that slaves didn’t make anything at all.
Gladiators • Gladiators originated in the rites of sacrifice due the spirits of the dead and the need to honor them with offerings of blood. • They were introduced to Rome in 264 BC, when the sons of Junius Brutus honored their father by matching three pairs of gladiators.
