DO NOW • Why did the population of Europe grow rapidly from 1000 to 1300? • Improvements to medicine c. better food production • Trade growth d. better diplomacy • How did guilds protect craftsworkers? • They set prices to prevent competition • They forbade those in other cities from having similar businesses • They raised prices regularly • They gave special prices to nobles • St. Thomas Aquinas emphasized • The use of Latin c. vows of poverty • The use of Greek d. the value of both faith and reason • What is the impact of the plague on Europe’s working class? answer in 1-2 sentences! 

  3. 7.6.3 Understand the development of feudalism • Population grows: plow, horse, horseshoe, harness • Three-field system: crop rotation, never go hungry, surplus • Trade; specialization (wine, olives, grapes) in crops • Italians create banking system, use letters of credit • Growth of trade=growth of towns; markets, shops, etc. • Guilds – group of people with same craft/job/city • Protects and regulates business • Sets prices, watches the quality

Could talk to animals! • Inspires St. Clare of Assisi, follows his teachings as a nun • Cathedrals built in towns with extra money • Gothic style – pointed arches, stained glass, gargoyles, statues • First universities, trade leads to more books • Thomas Aquinas – combines faith and reason, studies Aristotle • Believes in natural law: laws in nature that are basic • e.g., right vs. wrong; develops a proof that God exists

  5. 7.6.7 Map the spread of the bubonic plague • 2 straight years of rain – Great Famine • Crops ruined, animals die, not enough food • Hundred Years’ War between France and England • Edward III (England) says he is the King of France • Guns, cannons, longbows used for the 1st time • Joan of Arc leads French to victory • 1347 Europe hit by the bubonic plague, comes from Asia • Comes from rats, carried on ships/trade routes • 1/3rd of Europe dies • Jews are scapegoats for the plague, many were exiled or killed • End of feudalism, serfs start getting paid, population drops
