  2. Japanese Internment • Japanese-Americans – west coast • Racism, fear of sabotage • Lost millions of dollars in property • Korematsu v. US – constitutional because it wasn’t based on race, but on military urgency.

  3. Economic Gains • New Deal over. • War production skyrockets • Improvements in farming • Pulls US out of Depression

  4. Economic Strains • Full-time employment + scarce consumer goods = inflation • Office of Price Administration – price controls • War Labor Board – wage ceilings

  5. Paying for the War • $330 Billion total • Income tax raised • 3/5 borrowed

  6. Labor • Membership grew • No strike pledges • Smith-Connally Anti-Strike Act – authorized federal gov’t to seize and operate tied-up industries. • Bracero Program – Mexican agricultural workers brought to Southwest

  7. Women • Many (but not majority) went to work in factories • Rosie the Riveter – symbol for women working in defense plants • After war, 2/3 returned home

  8. Rationing • Office of Price Administration • Items needed for war were rationed – rubber, gasoline, sugar, meat
