The Yalta Conference • Meeting of the “Big Three” – January 1945 • Roosevelt, Churchill, Stalin • Called for creating a “peacekeeping” organization • Wanted free elections and Democratic gov’t for freed nations • Stalin didn’t honor all agreements • Remember… Soviet Union = Communism • Made Poland a communist government

  3. The War…Coming to a Close • FDR dies suddenly on April 12, 1945 • Hitler kills himself April 30 • V-E Day – Victory in Europe Day = May 8th, when Germany surrenders • But….Japan is still fighting • Why? • To use the bomb, or not use the bomb…that is the question!

  6. Potsdam Conference • Meeting of the “New Big Three” • Truman, Churchill, Stalin • Divided Germany into 4 zones of occupation for U.S. Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union to occupy • Berlin = also divided into 4 zones

  10. Communism Spreads Like a Disease • Stalin’s goal = to increase security around his country by creating Soviet-friendly nations located between their historic enemies • BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY!

  11. An Iron Curtain Descends • 1946, Churchill delivered speech in Fulton, MO • Blamed Soviets for creating an Iron Curtain • Stalin used Churchill’s words to convince Soviet people that U.S. and G.B. were their enemies!

Crisis in Berlin VS • U.S., Britain, and France instilled a Democratic government in their zones of Berlin • The Soviets instilled a communist regime in their zone • Soviets took drastic measures to prevent people from fleeing to “West Berlin” AKA the Federal Republic of Germany, from “East Berlin”

  14. The Berlin Airlift • Soviets blocked any road, rail, or river traffic into West Berlin, cutting them off from food, coal, and other necessities. • Britain and U.S. hosted the Berlin Airlift which supplied West Berlin with nearly 7,000 tons of supplies every day.

  15. NATO – April 1949 • North Atlantic Treaty Organization • Formed post Berlin Airlift • An alliance of the U.S., Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Italy, Norway, and Portugal • If an armed attack would hit one member, it would be acted upon by all members! • Currently, 26 countries are NATO members

  16. The United Nations • WANTED: An international organization able to solve international problems peacefully • Reps from 50 Nations drafted UN Charter • Serves as the International Court System! • The UN is organized as follows: • 2 Major Bodies = General Assembly and Security Council

  17. General Assembly Made up of all U.N. Nations Meets annually to debate policy, vote on members and approve the budget Security Council 15 member nations belong China, France, Great Britain, Russia, and U.S. have permanent seats Other 10 seats are allocated to members for 2 year terms Authorizes diplomatic, economic, and military disputes Organization of U.N. Cont.
