Brainstart: Roman Expansion • Title the next page as above and create an acrostic poem that spells out “Roman Army.” • Read the article “The Roman Army” with a partner. • For each letter in your acrostic poem, write out a statement of fact from the reading (your statement should a sentence): • Ex: “Roman soldier hiked 20 miles on many days carrying heavy backpacks.

  2. You will need 2 blank pages for your notes • Turn the paper sideways so that you have a horizontal page and draw a horizontal line across the page (for a timeline). • Title it like the next page…

  3. Roman Expansion Timeline Your page should look something like this.

Roman Expansion Timeline -Augustus expanded the empire to natural boundaries like rivers in order to make it easier to defend. - The Roman empire expanded from Britain in the east to the Black Sea in the west. • From 264-146 BCE, Rome and Carthage fought 3 major wars, called the Punic Wars. • Rome won the wars and gained control of Northern Africa, Spain and Sicily. Romans overthrow the Etruscan King and establish a republic Fourth Period of Expansion 44 BCE-14 CE Rome under Etruscan control Third Period of Expansion 145-44 BCE First Period of Expansion 509-264 BCE Second Period of Expansion 264-146 BCE 14 CE 509 BCE - The Romans fought many battles to protect land - Conquered their Latin and Etruscan neighbors - In 390 BCE, Rome was destroyed by the Gauls,. Rome had to be rebuilt. - By 264 BCE, they controlled all of Italy. • From 145-44 BCE, Rome controlled the Mediterranean World. Julius Caesar conquered much of Gaul (France). • Civil Wars divided Rome and Roman generals were proclaiming themselves dictators • Julius Caesar ruled as dictator but was murdered by the Senate. • Octavian (Augustus) became the supreme ruler.

Using the notes from your timeline and our reading, you will visualize each period of Roman expansion by drawing and coloring a detailed illustration that goes with each of the box on your table. When finished with your illustration, think of a ONE WORD caption that would describe each period of Roman expansion and write in at the bottom of each box.
