  1. British Rule in India Learning Goal: I can explain how the actions of groups of people impacted the history of India. Essential Question: How did British rule impact India? What makes you say that?

  2. British Rule in India British interest in India began with trade. Since other European countries began to provide more competition, the British East India company was given a charter to control their territory in India. However, distrust and dissatisfaction with company leadership resulted in a widespread mutiny of sepoy troops in 1857, causing the British to reconsider the structure of governance in India. The British raj was a period of direct British rule over the Indian subcontinent from 1858 until the independence of India and Pakistan in 1947. The British government took possession of the company’s assets and imposed direct rule. The powerlessness of Indians under British raj to determine their own future led to an increasingly adamant national independence movement. The movement achieved its goal if independence from Britain in 1947.
