  2. Who were “the commoners”? In medieval society there were three classes of people. Can you guess what they were? • Those who fought (the royalty and nobility) • Those who prayed (the clergy) • Those who worked (the commoners)

  3. The Commoners: those who worked There were also different levels of commoners: Merchants who were involved in commerce and trade of objects like cloth or spices. Craftsmen who created every day goods like smiths (metalworkers), or tanners (leather). Service professionals like innkeepers, tavern wenches, and prostitutes. Peasants who labored for the nobility and royalty on manors

  4. The Merchants • Merchants were the highest status commoners. • They provided fine goods to the nobility and royalty. • They resided in cities. Build your own model of a merchant’s house!

  5. The Craftsmen • The Craftsmen had the second greatest status among the commoners. • They created goods of different qualities which were available to anyone. • In the city they lived like poor merchants, living above their shops. In the country, they lived in cottages like peasants.

  6. Innkeepers, etc. • Innkeepers and other service professionals had the least status among the free commoners. • Like craftsmen, they lived in rooms above their establishment • Professional prostitutes usually lived in brothels. This was often the fate of women without a man to support and protect them.

  7. The Peasants • The peasants were had the lowest level of status among commoners. • They were not free men. • They gained some income from the produce they grew, but they owed rent to the lord for the cottage in which they lived, and owed taxes to him (usually a portion of the harvest) for his protection. They also had to ask permission from him to travel or marry.
