  1. Warm-up Answer the questions about chapters 17-19 • Where do the missionaries “get” to live and build their church? Why are they granted permission to do this? • What decision does Nwoye make about his family and the church? What is Okonkwo’s reaction? • Describe the appearance and life of the osu. How does all of this change with the missionaries? • What happens that causes the clan to act against the missionaries? What do they decide to do? • At the end of Okonkwo’s feast, what does Uchendu say in his speech about the younger generation?

What are some ways people tend to assert power over others? Why do they do this?

Partner Work • Label the journal entries you already did as either “mental” or “physical.” • With a partner, come up with one example of mental conquering and one example of physical conquering from the book and/or essay that neither of you have already written. • Write two journal entries on the back of your paper. Put both of your names above it. • Be prepared to explain to the class.
