  4. I. The Rise of Napoleon • A. Napoleon was a great military commander who rose through the military ranks and eventually earned command of an army training to invade England • B. He helped to set up a new government after the overthrow of the Directory

  13. IV. The Fall of Napoleon • A. In 1812, Napoleon invaded Russia • B. Since Russia is such a large country, Napoleon’s army was unable to defeat it. • Napoleon lost 300,000 troops in Russia • C. Knowing Napoleon’s army was weakened, other nations rose up to fight him

  14. IV. The Fall of Napoleon • D. With a weakened army, Napoleon could not hold off attacks from other nations • E. Eventually, Napoleon was sent into exile and the French monarchy was restored • F. However, Napoleon soon returned and regained control of his army
