  1. Warm up • Suppose someone told you that 1 pound of feathers was heavier than 1 pound of gold. • How would you prove them wrong? • What equipment would you need to show them that they were incorrect?

  2. Scientific Method

  3. What is the Scientific Method? • A series of steps that scientists use to answer questions and solve problems

  4. Step 1 : Ask a Question • Asking a question helps focus an investigation. • “Which is heavier?”

  5. Step 2: Research • In order to test a hypothesis scientist gather data on their question. • “I know for a fact that feathers are very light.”

  6. Step 3: Form a hypothesis • A hypothesis is a possible explanation, or answer to a question. • “I think gold is heavier.”

  7. Step 4: Experiment • To test a hypothesis scientist conduct a controlled experiment. • “I will weigh each item on a triple beam balance.”

  8. Make Observations • Scientist look at the results from their experiments and record the data. • “I see that a cubic cm of gold is heavier than a cubic cm of feathers.”

  9. Keeping Good Records • Scientists keep very detailed records for many reasons. • Prevent opinions from interfering 2. Keep notes for future experiments 3. Communicate with future scientists

  10. Step 5: Draw Conclusions • After analyzing their results, scientists decide if their results support their hypothesis. • If the hypothesis is wrong, the scientist will change the hypothesis and repeat the experiment.

  11. Warm up(Use your note from yesterday.) • Tell what part of the scientific method each scenario fits. • Is cold air heavier or lighter than hot air? • I think that a black shirt will make you warmer than a white shirt. • The professor that I talked to said that inch worms are longer than earth worms.

  12. Not Linear

  13. The Scientific Method • Question • Research • Hypothesis • Experiment • Conclusions

  14. The Scientific Method in Action • Question: • Which will bounce higher, a bouncy ball or a rubber band ball?

  15. The Scientific Method in Action • Research • Which feels softer? • Which is heavier • Which is more rubbery?

  16. The Scientific Method in Action • Hypothesis • I think the _________________ will bounce higher.

  17. The Scientific Method in Action • Experiment • How will I test this hypothesis?

  18. The Scientific Method in Action • Conclusion • Which bounced higher? • Was my hypothesis correct?
