Simplifying Binomials: FOIL Method and Multiplication (Lesson Objective: Expand and Simplify Binomials and Trinomials)

In this lesson, students will learn how to use multiplication to expand and simplify binomials and trinomials using the FOIL method. They will practice simplifying expressions involving variables and constants. The lesson also includes word problems involving the length and width of picture frames.

  3. Lesson Objective TSWBAT use multiplication to expand binomials and trinomials.

  4. Simplify. ( ) ( ) x + 3 4x + 5 4x2 + 5x + 12x + 15 4x2 + 17x + 15 FOIL F – first terms of each binomial. O – outside terms of the two binomials. I – inside terms of the two binomials. L – last terms of each binomial.

  5. Simplify. 1. (x + 5)(x – 4) 2. (x - 3)2 3. (2x + 5)(2x – 5) 4. (x + 7)(x + 5) 5. (3x – 2)(2x + 1) 6. (3y – 7)(4y – 5)

  6. Simplify. 1. (x + 1)(x2 + x – 1) 2. (x – 5)(2x2 – 7x – 2) 3. (x2 + 6x + 11)(3x + 5)

  7. A picture frames length is 5 more than twice its width. 1. Write an expression for the length and width of the picture frame. 2. Write an expression for the area. 3. If w = 12 find the area of the picture.
