  4. Endocrine System • Another way the body communicates (in addition to the nervous system) • Uses hormones • Sends messages through blood stream • Much slower process than nervous system

  5. Hormones • Chemicals which carry the messages throughout the blood steam

  7. Pituitary Gland • Main gland • Controls the output of hormones by other glands • Links Nervous System with Endocrine System • Tiny in size, HUGE in importance!!!!

  8. Thyroid Gland • Produces thyroxin • Linked to metabolism and growth • Not enough thyroxin  sluggish (hypothyroidism) • Too much thyroxin  hyper (hyperthyroidism)

  9. Adrenal Gland • Deal with emotions such as anger and fear • Produces adrenaline and noradrenaline, as well as cortical steroids • Handle emergencies

  10. Sex Glands • Testes (male)- Testosterone • Muscle and bone growth, male characteristics • Ovaries (female)- Estrogen, Progesterone • Reproductive Cycle
