The Expanding Universe

Why do scientists think the universe is getting bigger, will it continue to get bigger for ever?

By Ana and Harriet

What is the universe
What is the universe?

The universe is described as everything - everything that exists, will exist, and has existed.

  • As we know it, the universe is about 46 billion light years in radius and counting!

  • Scientific observations have suggested that the universe has been following the same physical laws and the way it changes since it was said to have begun

The fate of our universe
The Fate of our Universe

  • Physicists are always arguing about the fate of our universe – when the black hole will destroy everything, and their biggest question is:

  • What came before the Big Bang?

How is the universe expanding
How is the Universe expanding?

  • The universe can expand in three known ways: open, flat and closed.

  • If the universe were open, it would keep expanding for ever.

  • If the universe were flat, it would still expand forever, but, after an infinite amount of time, it would stop.

  • If the universe were closed, it eventually stop expanding and recollapse on itself, possibly causing another big bang.
