Ten Minute Math Today's Number: 471 • Students create an expression to equal 471 using addition and subtraction. • For example: 471= 600-200+50+30-9 and 300+150+21=471 • How can you be sure this expression equals 471? • Explain your strategy so that the rest of the class can understand it. • Describe and write about your strategies.

How many yogurts were in this case to begin with? Allow students to work in pairs to solve the problem. Then gather ideas for how to solve the problem, and write them on the board.
