  1. The Future of the Microprocessor Business Antonín Daněk CTU – FEE – STM - WaM ad@4td.cz

  2. Structure • The past - first three generations of computers • The presence - fourth generation of computers • The future - What will come next? Antonín Daněk - 4TD.cz

  3. The past - first three generations of computers • Generation zero : 1940 : Relay • 1 -10 operation/ second • Generation one : 1945 : Electron tube • 100 - 1000 operations / second Antonín Daněk - 4TD.cz

  4. The past - first three generations of computers • Generation two : 1956: Transistor • thousands operations / second • much smaller computers • Generation three : 1964: Integrated Circuit (IC) • tens of thousands operations / second • parallel usage Antonín Daněk - 4TD.cz

  5. The presence - fourth generation ofcomputers • Generation four : 1981 – now • Integrated Circuit • VLSI - Very-large-scale integration • Parameters • Tens of millions operations / second • Processor itself fits into few square centimeters Antonín Daněk - 4TD.cz

  6. The future - What will come next? • Moors law – Every 18 months, the number of transistors in ICs will be doubled. Antonín Daněk - 4TD.cz

  7. The future - What will come next? • Current: 65 nm, 45 nm • 32 nm – should be on stores soon • 22 nm - 2011–2012 • 16 nm – 2018 • 11 nm – 2022 • The smaller technology, the more transistors fit on a smaller space. • ICs have its’ borders. It is not possible to make transistors smaller to infinity. Antonín Daněk - 4TD.cz
