  1. Warm-up • Write analysis of how ONE (or both if you have time) of the following documents would support the following prompt: Analyze whether or not the increase of nationalism in the 19th Century served a positive end that united people, cultures and states. 2. If you were writing an “EA” for one of these, what type of EA would you use? (POV, HC, IA, POD)

  2. Source 1: MiroslaveTyrs, commemorative speech as cofounder, annual meeting, Czech National Gymnastics Organization, Prague 1863 Our work is difficult and our task is sacred. We must create a new race, hardier than its predecessors. Combining a strong body with a strong will, we will once again unit the dovelike meekness of the Slav with the falcon-like boldness of more glorious times. This new race will not depend on foreigners for its rights.... 3. In the 2nd half of the 19th century nations become responsive nation states. Realpolitik leaders use reform and nationalism to lead their countries. HW Review for Ottoman Nationalism and mini-lecture/film clips on Crimean War. Any notes you take you can take on the back of Assignment #4 (unless you wish to take them on your actual HW)

  4. The big and unstable Ottoman Empire is not so successful in their pursuit of being a responsive nation state • 15 million people • 200,000 sq miles Challenges from Greece, North Africa Tanzimat – capitalism, equality before the law Internal nationalism (Young Turks)

  5. Crimea: Senseless conflict, large death toll…and can we blame it for lung cancer too? Crimean War signifies the end of the “Concert of Europe” and the monarchs club It illustrates the growth of Nationalism It shows the power of industrial technology in war

  6. How did Crimea start? (Think political Mean Girls) Big picture: Balance of power! Countries want more power! Some countries backstab other countries to win power for themselves!

  7. Little picture: on my website • In line with the newly popular nationalist ideas - France wants to break free from the containment of the Congress of Vienna • Russia wants territory in Ottoman Empire (sick man of Europe) • Napoleon encourages Tsar Nicholas to be more aggressive (thought it would be good for France if others were embroiled in a war) – so Russia attacks ports in the Ottoman Empire • France convinces Austria to be neutral and disrupts Austria/Russia alliance. Austria doesn’t want Russia to expand into the Balkans – THEIR territory • Britain doesn’t want their naval routes to East Asia disrupted and supports the Ottomans. • France and Britain band together to attack Russia

  8. Impacts • Nationalistic propaganda rallies the British behind the cause. • Fighting in the Crimea is devastating. More than a million die of disease and starvation. 9. War only ends when a devastated Russia vies for peace. 10. War shows Russia needs to be modernized. 11. War shows Nationalism is a more powerful tool for conservatives than the Congress of Vienna “monarchs club”

  9. Use the cartoons to better understand how countries used war to promote Nationalism (in this case England) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JB0lZZWArYc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vuhec_llrGw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43PpM6hTbG0

  10. How is the clip from the “Charge of the Light Brigade” symbolic of feelings of nationalism? • How does war strengthen nationalism?
