  2. Welcome to India We hope you had a pleasant time in Gandhi Nagar, enjoying the wonderful hospitality of our IEEE friends from Gujarat.

History • Activity in India dates back to 1935 when Kharagpur Section under the then AIEE Reg. 9 was formed (73 yrs back) • IEEE India Section formed in 1963 • Reg. 10 created in 1967 • 1st Student Br. of R10 formed in 1968 in Shizuka Univ. of Japan • 2nd in Lahore Univ. 1971 • 3rd in IIT Delhi in 1973 - India • 4th in REC, Warangal in 1973 – India • IEEE India Council formed on 20 May 1976

Highlights of Achievements • India Council (IC) - Largest Council in member-strength among the 17 Councils in R1-R10 • With 10 Sections and 4 Sub-sections, IC is next only to Florida with 12 Sections • R10 is largest among all regions (18% of members) and IC accounts for 35 % of the R10 Membership • In last 20 years, worldwide membership grew by 130%, R10 by 350%, IC by 550%

Membership Growth • Bombay among the top 5 Sections in the world, in 2002, 2003 & 2004 • IC with 369 Student Branches in 10 Sections accounts for 20% of world student membership • Among the top 5 Sections world over in Student Membership, 4 Sections were under IC (2006 statistics) • Of the top 10, 6 were under IC • (Madras, Bombay, Hyderabad, Kerala, Bangalore, and Delhi)

  6. Student Branches in India • Among the 1400 student branches around the world, the following top the list (Dec 2007) • 1. Alexandria Univ of Egypt- 586 • 2. Georgia Inst.- 494 • 3. Maharashtra Academy- 475   • 4. Velammal – 455 • 5. Univ of Texas, Austin- 331

Top 30 Student Branches Worldwide • IEEE Student Services list the top 30 Br. with their rank and strengths (Dec.’07) and in brackets their rank (if any)  and strength as of Dec.‘06 • Student Branches from India:  • Rank 3- Maharastra Academy-475 (#4-455) • Rank 4 - Velammal-455(#5-430) • Rank 6 - SSGM C of Engg, Bombay-(#9-375) • Rank 7 - Crescent Engg.-289 (#1-693) • Rank 9 - Thadomal Shahani-Bombay-270(#13-322) • Rank 14 - Kongu Engg. Madras- 226 (230) • Rank 20 - SiddagangaInst., Bangalore-213 (119) • Rank 21 - NIT(REC) Karnataka-210 (170) • Rank 22 - K J Somayya Coll of Engg Bombay-206 (120) • Rank 25 - Chengannur Coll of Engg. Kerala-193 (106) • Ten out of thirty top student branches are from India

  8. Women In Engineering • R10 leads other Regions in Women in IEEE • Of the total of 32,798 women members world wide, 27% (8897) are in R10 - 20% in India • Similar figures for women student members: 45%, 40% respectively

IEEE Gujarat Section • Our Hosts for R10 Meet • Hospitality at its peak and attention to details – Model for other IEEE entities to emulate • Major achievements of Gujarat Section: • 2004 R10 Outstanding Small Section Award • 2006 R10 Outstanding Volunteer Award for its member • Its innovation 'Sampark - an event for students was featured by ‘The Institute’ • 2006 Larry K Wilson award for its student member. • Organised AISC 2007 - National IEEE event. • Now organising 2008 R10 Meet. • All these achievements by a Section small among others in India • Three cheers to IEEE Gujarat’s highly dedicated team.

Finally, • We welcome the India Initiative announced by IEEE President and India Council will dovetail its activities with the this Initiative to bring benefits to IEEE movement in general and India in particular. • IEEE in India is poised to make great strides in the coming years – By expanding the reach all over India, now emerging as a knowledge economy. • IEEE India Council will be the catalyst making it happen, with support from all entities in IEEEdom.
