  17. Functions that Humans must Perform to Maintain Life (Continued) • All • Produces • Produces • Increase

  18. Survival Needs – factors necessary to maintain human life

  19. The Language of Anatomy • Anatomy is full of terms to describe regions of the body and where they are located in relationship to one another. • You will be responsible for learning many of the directional and regional terms, but not all.

  20. Anatomical Position • When speaking about the body, we always assume that the body is in a standard position called the • Body is standing • Head and toes face forward • Feet slightly apart • Arms hanging at sides • Palms facing forward • Now, you try!

  21. Body Planes • There are three major anatomical planes; transverse, coronal (or frontal), and midsagittal.

  22. Directional Terms • Used to explain the location of a structure relative to the structures surrounding it.

  23. Directional Terms (Continued) Practice: http://www.wiley.com/college/apcentral/anatomydrill/t01/at0111_1.htm

  24. Practice with Directional Terms • The wrist is _________________ to the hand. • The breastbone is ____________ to the spine. • The brain is ______________ to the spinal cord. • The thumb is ______________ to the fingers. (Be careful – remember the proper anatomical position.)

  25. Regional Body Terms

  26. Anterior (Frontal) Body Terms (Pg. 16)

  27. Anterior Body Practice – Drag each text box to its appropriate Placement Cephalic Region: Antecubital Buccal Frontal Nasal Orbital Oral Patellar Pelvic Pubic (genital) Sternal Key: Umbilical = Thorax = Abdomen = Back (Dorsum) Anterior Terms

  28. Posterior (Back) Body Terms (Pg. 16)

  29. Posterior Body Practice – Drag each text box to its appropriate Placement Calcaneal Gluteal Lumbar Occipital Sacral Scapular Key: Vertebral = Thorax = Abdomen = Back (Dorsum) Posterior/Dorsal Terms

  30. Anterior / Posterior Terms (Pg. 16)

  31. Anterior/Posterior Body Practice – Drag each text box to its appropriate Placement Antebrachial Axillary Brachial Carpal Cervical Crural Deltoid Key: = Thorax Digital Digital = Abdomen Femoral = Back (Dorsal) Tarsal Anterior/Ventral Terms

  32. Internal Body Cavities KEY: Dorsl cavity Cranial cavity Ventral cavity • Dorsal Body Cavity: • Cranial cavity – • Spinal cavity – • Ventral Body Cavity: • Thoracic cavity – • Abdominopelvic cavity – Thoracic cavity Diaphragm Abdominal cavity Spinal cavity Abdominopelvic cavity Pelvic cavity
