  4. Information System • System: a group of components that interact to achieve some purpose • Information system (IS): a group of components that interact to produce information • IS: computer-based information system • High-tech versus low-tech IS

  5. IS Components • Hardware • Software • Data • Procedures • People – the most important one

  6. User’s Responsibility • Active role to define the system’s requirement • Use the IS to accomplish your jobs and goals • Protect the IS security • Perform backup and recovery

  7. Information and Data • Date: raw • Information • Knowledge derived from data • Data presented in a meaningful context • Processed data • Data processed by summing, ordering, average, grouping, comparing or other similar operations • A difference that makes a difference

  8. Information Characteristics • Accurate: cross check • Timely: real time • Relevant • Just barely sufficient • Worth its cost

  9. Information Technology (IT) • Products, methods, inventions, and standards that are used for the purpose of producing information

  10. Moore’s Law • The number of transistors per square inch on an integrated chip doubles every 18 months • The speed of a computer chip doubles every 18 months • Decreasing price/performance ratio • Internet
