  6. Maintain Integrity • “True art (music) integration is when you put an equal amount of weight into your preparation, work with, and use of the art.” (Elizabeth Petersen, 2010)

  7. After this T.I.W. you will have (experienced) learned… • How to select appropriate music. • How to integrate music as your muse. • How music can inspire writing in various genres. • How the creative arts are relevant & meaningful to learning. • How reluctant writers are inspired.

  8. The Affective Filter “…songs are also known to lower the “affective filter “ or, in other words to motivate learners to learn.” (Mol, 2010)

  9. Myers’ Present Pedagogy • Music to set the mood • Correlated music with subject matter • Exposure & experiences • 90% have no lyrics • Discussions about the music’s relationship to their readings.

  10. Selecting appropriate music • “ ‘Real’ music that the children hear and play everyday can be extremely motivating in the classroom…” (Mol, 2009)

  11. Selecting appropriate music “ Research has found that pop songs have characteristics that help learning a second language: they often contain common, short words; they are written about 5th grade level(US)” (Murphy, 1992)

  12. “Hook” the reluctant writers Research suggests we “hook” unengaged or apathetic students into reading and writing by manipulating situations and goals.” (Hidi and Harackiewicz, 2001)

  24. Imagine - A Gallery Walk • Activity #3, part 2 Hang your art work around he room. Quietly take a gallery walk. Choose a piece that is NOT your own. Choose any genre and write about your new piece of art work. Once we complete our sharing, please return the art work to the rightful owner.
