There are 4 FP Instruments • Diplomacy • Trade • Aid • Military Power
What we are doing… • Examining how the pursuit of the National Interest interacts with foreign policy. • Make links and connections between the four N.I. and these instruments.
Diplomacy • Panda Diplomacy • Chequebook Diplomacy • Use of Veto in the UN • Public Denouncements
Panda Diplomacy • Yes – it’s a real thing. • Use of Pandas as a diplomatic ‘friendship’ tool.
Chequebook Diplomacy • Used to limit the support for seccessionist provinces (Tibet, Taiwan, Xinjiang) • Taiwan (ROC) does the same. • Who is winning? 6 states recognise Taiwan, 23 states PRC sovereignty.
Use of Veto • Iran example in textbook p. 91. • Syria • Zimbabwe • North Korea (although…)
Public Denouncements • Any state that expresses support or sympathy for separatist groups is publicly denounced by PRC. • Usually a demand for an apology is issued. • 2008 – France honours Dalai Lama, PRC demands apology and ‘stay out of it’.
