  1. Warm Up On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being “extremely hard,” how hard do you think life was like for these three separate groups of people at the start of Reconstruction? -Plantation owners -Poor whites -Freedmen (former slaves)

  3. Main Goals Reconstruction was the federal government’s controversial effort to: Repair the damage to the South Reunite the Southern states to the Union

  4. Groups Impacted

  5. Plantation Owners • Lose their slaves • Have to pay workers to tend to their crops/fields

  6. Plantation Owners, cont. • Land/property was often seized by the government • House/land possibly destroyed during war

  7. Poor/Middling Whites • Lose social status • Employment issues WHY?????

  8. Poor/Middling Whites • Lose property/homes • Many migrate West for jobs, but need $$$

  9. Freedmen • Freed in an area destructed by war • Homeless • Unemployed And perhaps the biggest problem…

  11. To Leave or Not to Leave? What would be some reasons why freedmen would leave? Why would they stay?
