  1. Warm Up What challenges are you aware of that the United States faces in the Middle East?

  2. Foreign Policy in the Middle East • Based on two issues: long-standing support of Israel and the flow of oil out of the region • Support Israel’s right to defend itself against terrorism • Support for a two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

  3. Foreign Policy in the Middle East • Support for stability, inclusiveness, democratic governance in Iraq, Libya, and Syria • Prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons • Destruction of the Islamic State • Support efforts to reduce sectarianism in the region

  4. Based on the cartoon and what we have discussed about the current state of the Middle East, what are the risks to American interests in the Middle East if Iran were to build a nuclear weapon?

  5. Issues with Iran • 1953: US and UK support a coup against leftist elected government • 1979: hardline Islamists overthrow American-backed Shah (king) • 1980s: US supports Iraq in Iran-Iraq War • 2000s: Iran starts a nuclear reactor and doesn’t allow in international inspectors • Iran is also a state-sponsor and funder of terrorism

  6. What should be done? Based on what you learned about Iran and its nuclear program, what should the United States and its allies do to make sure that Iran cannot build a nuclear weapon. Back up your point of view with details from today’s lesson
