  1. Warm Up • Answers • Associative property of addition • Distributive property • Inverse property of addition • Commutative property • Closure • 6. Inverse property of multiplication Name each property • 4 + (3 + 6) = (4 + 3) + 6 • a(b – c) = ab – ac • 8 + -8 = 0 • (ab)c = (ac)b • 3 + 2 = 5

  2. Lesson 1.3 Operations with Integers SWBAT: Recognize, be able to solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of integers.

  3. 1. Adding integers • When signs are alike, add the numbers and keep the sign. • Ex 1. -3 + -4 = ________ • Ex 2. 12 + 20 = ________ -7 32

  4. When signs are opposite, subtract the numbers and use the sign of the bigger number. 1. Adding integers continued • Ex 3. -10 + 7 = _____ • Ex 4. -12 + 14 = _____ -3 2

  5. When subtracting integers, change the subtraction sign to an addition sign, and do the opposite to whatever follows. 2. Subtracting integers • Ex 5. -5 - -3 = _______ • Ex 6. -9 - 10 = _______ -2 -19

  6. 3. Comparing integers • The number to the right on a number line is always larger. (>,<, =) • Ex 7. -7 ___ -2 • Ex 8. -5 ___ -8 < >

  7. 4. Multiplying and Dividing Integers. • When signs are alike, your answer is positive. • Ex 9. (-4)(-2) = ______ • Ex 10. 9(8) = ______ 8 72

  8. 4. Multiplying and Dividing Integers continued. • When signs are opposite, your answer is negative. • Ex. 11. -9 (4) = ______ • Ex 12. 12 (-3) = ______ -36 -36

  9. Your Turn • -5 + -2 = • 4 – 5 = • -3 – -6 = • (-3)4 = • (-4)(-4) = • 7(6)= • -7 • -1 • 3 • -12 • 16 • 42

  10. Summary: • Name the different sets of rules when adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing integers. How will you remember them? • Worksheet Homework:
