  3. The Black Death • The Black Death was also known as the bubonic plague. • The Bubonic plague was a contagious epidemic disease that was transmitted by fleas on rats.

  4. Symptoms • This disease was very fatal. • The symptoms included chills, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and the formation of buboes.

  5. Effects • Economy • Many financial businesses disrupted because their owners were dying. • The labor shortage was extremely severe. • Entire families were dying out and their possessions were left with no heirs.

  6. Effects • Population • One out of every three people died (Europe’s population decreased by one-third).

  7. Effects • Culture • Professors and teachers were dying. Therefore, schools and universities closed and people stopped receiving education. • Priests and bishops were also dying and churches were abandoned.

  8. Effects • Politics • City councils were ravaged. • Local nobles and their families were wiped out. • Courts closed down and therefore wills could not be probated.
