Fear of Failure-Symptoms are: • Excuses before, during, and after performance • Preoccupied with what others think • Preoccupation with opponent's reputation or rank • Indecisiveness with strategy or skills • Feelings of non-control • Psychosomatic ailment. • Mentally develop an injury • Over anxiousness • Performance Anxiety • Susceptibility to sickness due to stress

Fear of Success – To Help: • Keep to personal goals, not fan’s or parents expectations • Anticipate and Prepare to be # 1 • Expand your comfort zone • Imagery of being #1 • Fake it until you make it • Play your own game • Not what friends, fans, or relatives say • Remove ‘Identity’ from success

  16. The Perfectionist • Defined as a type A personality, characterized by over training, burnout, and guilt associated with rest or happiness

  17. Perfectionist - Causes • Identity tied directly to performance • Upbringing • Others close to you never satisfied with your performance • Irrational achievement orientation • Nothing is ever good enough

  18. Perfectionist – To Help • Positive associations with mental and physical rest • Take time to enjoy successes • Dwell on the process and not the outcome. Enjoy getting there. • Keep visual reminders of progress such as charts and graphs

  19. The Underachiever • Defined as a naturally good athlete without effort = success orientation. Possessing good athletic ability without having to work for it.

  20. The Underachiever - Concerns • Lacks Pride. • Pride comes from accomplishing goals • Lives in the past • Fails to look into the future • Unprepared for the next level of competition • Effect on teammates • Lazy attitude rubs off on others • Doesn’t understand work ethic of team

  21. Underachiever – To Help • Verbal commitment from the athlete to change • Educate that effort = success • Goal Setting • Include Past, Present, and Future • Compete against self • Contribution to team

  22. Learned Effectiveness Defined as internally motivated, intrinsically motivated, Positive motivation towards success

  23. Learned Effectiveness – Characterized By • No excuses, No Blaming • Weakness seen as a challenge • Strong emotion of pride • Confidence based on pride • Goal setting • Determinants of success are internal and self- oriented • Balanced time orientation
