  4. TRUCK CLASSIFICATIONS • GVW is the weight of a • vehicle plus its freight • GVWR is the maximum • allowable weight of the • vehicle plus the weight • of the load it can carry. • There are three classes • of light and medium duty, • and two classes of heavy • duty trucks. (pg2)

  5. OEM’s • There are four major medium and heavy duty truck manufactures in North America. • Diamler AG: Freightliner, Western Star • DAF-Paccar: Peterbilt, Kenworth • International Trucks: Navistar • Volvo-Mack: Mack Trucks, Volvo Trucks

  6. Axle Classifications • The first number refers to the total number of wheel sets, and the second to the number that are driven. • 4x4: 4 wheels 4 driven • 6x4: 6 wheels 4 driven • 4x2: 4 wheels 2 driven • 4x6: piece of lumber • 2x4: piece of lumber

  22. Summary Trucks are classified by their gross vehicle weight (GVW), the weight of the vehicle plus its load, and by the number of axles they have. Heavy-duty trucks have a GVW of 26,001 pounds or more.

  23. Summary (cont.) A successful heavy-duty truck technician must be able to maintain good customer relations and working relations, use effective communications skills, maintain a safe work environment, perform preventive maintenance, use tools and equipment properly, troubleshoot, correct problems by repairing or replacing, and upgrade skills and knowledge continuously.
