Warm Up • Journal Response (review from last lesson) • We have learned about the emphasis the Victorians placed on decorum and proper behavior. Do you think that your generation values manners? Give at least two examples to support your opinion.
Personification Objection: SWBAT define personification, identify it in text and use it in their own writing.
Definition • Personification is giving human qualities, feelings, action, or characteristics to inanimate (non-living) objects.
Example • The wind sang her mournful song through the falling leaves. • A wind can not “sing”. A person can sing. The author is giving the wind a human characteristic. • The personification means that the wind was blowing through the tree, making noise as the leaves fell to the ground. The word choice makes the mood sad.
Personification in “Ulysses” • “the vessel puffs her sail” (Line 44) • Vessel=Boat • What is the vessel doing? Puffing her sails. • Can a boat really puff her own sails? No. • A person can puff out his or her chest to show pride. • This personification tells us what the ship wants or feels-to be proud and sail again.
Guided Practice- Tell your Partner • The microwave timer told me it was time to turn my TV dinner. • What is the personification? • What is the microwave “doing” that only humans can do? • The personification is “The microwave timer told me”. • I know this because a microwave can’t speak.
With your Partner • Write down the sentence. • Underline the personification in the sentence. • Explain what the personification means. The rain kissed my cheeks as it fell. The strawberries seemed to sing, "Eat me first!" The daffodils nodded their yellow heads at the walkers. The china danced on the shelves during the earthquake.
Personification Groups • With your partner, move around the room to the four stations. • At each station write one sentence, using personification describing the object. • You may use the word bank at each station or use your own words.
Example • Describe a car enginestarting in a blizzard • Descriptive words (things that a human and engine can do): cough, sputtered, choked… • Personification: The car engine coughed and sputtered when it started during the blizzard.
On your own • Use personification to write a sentence describing someone’s eyes. You may use the word bank or use your own descriptive words. • Descriptive words: happy, kind, burning, angry, mischievous. • The woman’s _______ eyes were _________.
