  4. I. Cause of Revolutions • A. The Enlightenment • 1. Ideas about individual rights and just forms of government made citizens revolt against governments they did not see as enlightened

  5. II. The American Revolution • A. Causes • 1. The French and Indian War – Britain and France fought a war over claim to land in America • a. Britain defeated the French and gained control of most of North America • 2. To pay for the war, Britain increased taxes on the colonists

  6. II. The American Revolution • 3. One of these taxes was created by the stamp act, which taxed any paper products • 4. Because of the high taxes and economic control by the king, colonists organized a military and began to fight for independence

  7. II. The American Revolution • B. American Independence • 1. Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, which was inspired by Enlightenment thinkers and officially declared the American colonies free of British rule

The French Revolution • French Revolution • What were some of the reasons for the French Revolution? • How did the government react to these problems? • In what place did the French people begin to create a constitution? • What ended the reign of terror (when many people were beheaded) and the French Revolution?

  13. III. The French Revolution • A. Causes • 1. Social Classes (called estates) – Nobles and clergy (who were only 2% of the population) owned about 35% of the land and did not pay any taxes. • All of the money in France’s government came from working class citizens

  15. III. The French Revolution • 2. Poor economy – King Louis XVI was one of the richest kings in the history of the world, while many of his subjects were starving to death. • Why do you think this angered the French people?

Because of the economic problems, Louis XVI called a meeting of representatives from each of the estates to discuss the raising of taxes • 2. Representatives from the working class (3rd estate) thought that all estates should have to pay taxes.

  18. III. The French Revolution • 3. Louis XVI would not allow the clergy and nobles to pay taxes, so the 3rd estate vowed to create a constitution and a new government. • 4. When representatives for the 3rd estate met to discuss the constitution, the doors to their meeting place were locked. So , they met at a nearby tennis court

  22. III. The French Revolution • 5. In response, Louis XVI sent troops to put down the revolution. However, many of these troops joined the rebels.

  28. IV. The Reign of Terror • A. The National Assemblyoverthrew King Louis XVI and ruled over France • B. Since this new government was weak, there was fear of counter – revolutionaries and foreign invasion

  29. IV. The Reign of Terror • C. The new government began to execute people who they believed threatened the revolution • 1. For executions, they used a machine called the guillotine. • Over 16,000 people were killed in this way

  30. IV. The Reign of Terror • The National Assembly created the Committee of Public Safety, which carried out executions • This committee was headed by Maximillien Robespierre
