  3. Temples Temples were places for • Worship • Rituals and ceremonies • Social gatherings They also functioned as banks • Protection of the gods • Kept the city funds and valuables safe • People were VERY superstitious

  4. Temple of Apollo

  5. The basilica • Lawcourt • Meeting place • Roofed and colonnaded, so cooler than meeting outside • Place to see and be seen

  6. Macellum • This was a fish market, meat market (perhaps) and possibly a café area • Scales and bones were found in the drain in the large circular area.

  7. Sanctuary of the LaresPublici • The Lares are household gods, so they are specific to individual families. • The city had a set of Lares, too. (Hence the term “publici”) • One researcher thinks that this building may not have been a public lararium, but rather a public library.

  8. The Building of Eumachia • This lady was powerful. She was a priestess of Augustus and dedicated this building, along with her son, to the clotheworkers. • Some people think this place was a meeting hall for the fullers and other people who worked with clothe. • Another theory is that it was a bazaar for weavers, fullers, and other clotheworkers to sell their wares. (Think of the indoor area of Tade Days).

Comitium • This was where Pompeiians voted. • There were entrances in the forum, and it had exits onto the Street of Shops (Via dell’ Abbondanza) • There was a podium inside where town officials/magistrates sat when presiding over the electoral proceedings. • Its walls have niches that housed honorary statues.
