  1. Warm-up • How the air gravity people use. Gravity to use air. • If immigration continues to increase, what percent of the world will be mixed races? • How does air pollution affect animals and their environment? • Score these scientific questions and explain your score. • Are they PLUS questions? • Are they testable questions? • Use the 0-5 scale • Rewrite the questions to make them better.

  2. Introduction • Why is it important to begin research and investigations with quality scientific questions? • If we are following the steps in the scientific method, what would be the next two steps in the process after developing a quality question?

  3. What is a hypothesis? What it is What it is not Random guess Educated guess • Explanation • Idea • Proposition • Logical thought • Prediction

  4. Writing a hypothesis • I predict…because • I hypothesize…because • If…then…because

  5. Examples Testable questions Hypothesis I predict that scores increased slightly in 2012 because class periods were longer and students worked hard. 2. I hypothesize that approximately 50% of trees in Colorado Springs are conifers because about half the trees near my house are pines. 3. If the temperature of water is increased, then the amount of sugar that can be dissolved increases because the water will be moving around more as it heats up. • How do the 2012 math TCAP scores for North compare to 2011? • What is the percentage of trees in Colorado Springs that are conifers? 3. How does the temperature of water effect the amount of sugar that can be dissolved?

  6. Practice • Write a hypothesis • What happens to plant cells if they are placed in saltwater? • Write a hypothesis • How does changing the mass of a toy car effect the speed as it rolls down a ramp?

  7. Videos • MacGyver Myth - Light bulb and Drain Cleaner • Drowning Cockroaches • Plane on Conveyor Belt Essential Questions • What is the testable question? • What is your hypothesis? • How was the hypothesis tested?

  8. More vids • Banana peels • Parachute Car • Jet Stream Taxi • Tree and Machine Gun • Texting and Driving

  9. Scientific Question • What are the characteristics and identity of the gas released by sodium bicarbonate when it is placed in water?

  10. Hypotheses (examples)

  11. Research questions • Write several questions that will help you with making a quality hypothesis. • What other information do you need to know?

  12. Procedure • Pour water in each flask. • Place one tablet of Alka Seltzer in one flask, and one tablet of Efferdent in the second flask. • After a few seconds, add a second tablet to each flask. • Light the wood splint and place the flame into the first flask-with the Alka Seltzer-without touching the liquid at the bottom of the flask. • Light the wood splint again, and blow out the flame. Make sure the splint has a glowing ember on the end. • Put the splint with the glowing ember into the second flask with the Efferdent.

  13. DOL • Write a hypothesis for ONE question. • Write a brief procedure describing how to test each hypothesis • What percentage of Carmel Middle students participate in activities/clubs/sports? • What percentage of Americans have regular access to the Internet? • How do gasoline prices in the United States compare to Canada, Germany, and Saudi Arabia?

  14. Fire extinguisher demo • What substance is the white powder? • What gas was released during the reaction? • What substance is the liquid?
