Fact or Fib: Manifest Destiny and Reform

1. Fact or Fib: Manifest Destiny and Reform Directions: Using a scratch piece of paper, make two cards. Label one card fact and the other fib. When I put the statement on the screen decide whether it is a fact or fib. When I say go, lay down your card. Whoever plays the write card, gets a point!

2. Fact or Fib: Statement 1 Manifest Destiny is the belief that it was the destiny of the US to control the lands from the Atlantic to the Pacific. FACT

3. Fact or Fib: Statement 2 The Oregon Trail (1840) was opened by mountain men and led to the American settlement of Oregon. FACT

4. Fact or Fib: Statement 3 The Santa Fe trail was the route taken by pioneers to settle New Mexico. FIB This was a trade route in the Mexican Territories that mainly centered around silver, horses, and guns.

5. Fact or Fib: Statement 4 The largest migration in US History was along the Mormon Trail when 12000 Mormons went to Utah for a religious settlement. FACT

6. Fact or Fib: Statement 5 The California Trail and the California Gold Rush (1849) led to the increase settlement in the Louisiana Territory. FIB Led to an increase in settlement in California. Lots of forty-niners!

7. Fact or Fib: Statement 6 In 1836, Texas and Americans fought against the Mexicans for independence and statehood in the U.S. FIB Texas won its independence from Mexico in 1836. It wasn’t until 1845, that the Republic of Texas was annexed by the United States.

8. Fact or Fib: Statement 7 The Mexican American War (1846-48) was ended by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. FACT

9. Fact or Fib: Statement 8 In the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the US gave up its claims to the western part of North America. FIB The United States obtain the area known as Mexican Cession. This area included the present day states of New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and California.

10. Fact or Fib: Statement 9 The Gadsden Purchase from Mexico included the rest of southern New Mexico and Arizona. FACT

11. Fact or Fib: Statement 10 The Second Great Awakening was a religious revival and was part of the spiritual reform movement. FACT

12. Fact or Fib: Statement 11 In the Adams-Onis Treaty (1819), Spain gave up Florida and Texas to the United States. FIB Spain only gave up its claims to Florida. The United States gave up all claims to Texas.

13. Fact or Fib: Statement 11 Transcendentalists like Henry David Thoreau believed that civil disobedience was not a good thing. FIB They actually practiced civil disobedience. They also believed that the relationship between humans and nature was very important.

14. Fact or Fib: Statement 12 The educational reform movement was led by Horace Mann. FACT

15. Fact or Fib: Statement 13 Leaders of the temperance movement wanted women to not only be able to vote, but to be able to own their own property. FIB The temperance movement was concerned with banning alcohol. .

16. Fact or Fib: Statement 14 Harriet Beecher Stowe’s book, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, delighted southerners with its positive description of slavery and plantation life. FIB This book greatly upset the North and South. The South thought it was inaccurate description of slavery.

17. Fact or Fib: Statement 15 Some of the people associated with the abolitionist movement were William Lloyd Garrison, Frederick Douglass, and Harriet Tubman. FACT

18. Fact or Fib: Statement 16 The Underground Railroad used an abandoned subway system to transport slaves to freedom in the North. FIB It was underground because it was secret. It was a network with “conductors”, but usually no trains or train tracks were involved.

19. Fact or Fib: Statement 17 Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Staton, and Susan B. Anthony held the Seneca Falls Convention to discuss prison reform. FIB Seneca Falls Convention was for women’s rights and suffrage. They wrote the Declaration of Sentiments were they made this known.

20. Fact or Fib: Statement 18 FACT Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, and Harriet Tubman were all former slaves involved in the Abolition Movement.
