  2. What We Consider First • Not the resurrection, but the empty tomb. • The Romans were masters of killing. Jesus was dead! • The Jews, Joseph and Nicodemus buried him. • The Jews and Romans guarded the tomb. • Now it is empty.

  3. What Happened to the Body? • John 20:1-10 – stone rolled away. To let Jesus out, or to let the disciples in? • John Believed. • Did Jews steal the body of this martyr? • Did the Apostles steal the body? • Did the Romans do away with it? Why? • Did He rise from the dead?

  4. The Effect of the Resurrection • On Mary – John 20:11-18 “Touch me not”. From despair and confusion to excitement. • On the apostles – from fearful men hiding from public to fearless proclaimers of the resurrection – Acts 3-4. • Thomas especially – “My Lord and my God!”

  5. The Witnesses and Their Honesty • Their agreement with each other – Acts 2:14. Gal. 2 - Paul and Peter disagreed. Acts 15 – Paul and Barnabas disagreed. BUT, not about the resurrection. • Their willingness to suffer. James, Stephen, Paul and the rest. Secular religious history. Only John died a “natural” death.

  6. Fear, greed and ambition are the motivators in telling lies. Do these apply to the apostles. • Look at the women – They went to anoint a body, not worship the Lord. The last thing they expected was to find Jesus risen. • In the Greco-Roman or Jewish world no one would listen to a grieving woman ranting about a resurrection. A poor basis for a new religion.

  7. I Cor 16:22 – Maranatha, “Come O Lord”. Would you pray that to a dead rabbi? • These events started a new life, not just a new religion. A total change of culture, from “kosher” to natural, and not just in food regulations. • There are reasons for our faith.
