  2. Have you ever called a major U.S. company like Verizon or Microsoft and been connected to someone with an Indian accent? If so, why is that?

  3. III. The Division of Asia: • The British in India • 1. The Sepoy Rebellion • East India Co. = Brits had trading posts throughout India • By 1857 = Brits controlled most of Ind.

  4. Sepoys (Indian Soldiers) – rebelled against Christianity • Killed Rebellion = tightened grip on India

  5. 2. Indian Nationalism • Brits built roads + RR + schools + irrigation • Farmers told to grow cotton instead of wheat = • millions died • 1947: gained indep. - Gandhi

  6. B. China & the West • Unequal Treaties • 1500 – 1800: China is isolated – Why? • West trades Opium for Silk and Tea • 1842: Opium Wars = Brits Win = Treaty of Nanking

  7. From treaty Britain got: • - $ • - control of trade • - Hong Kong • Eur. + Japan also exploit China trading

  8. 2. Chinese Response • Nationalism = but little unity • Old ways vs. modern ways • Boxers = attacked foreigners = western forces win

  9. Revolution of 1911 • - people overthrow the dynasty • - China becomes a Republic

  10. C. Japan • - 1857: U.S. Warships commanded by: • Matthew Perry = demand trade • Fearing war = Japan agrees to trade • Samurai leaders adopt strategy: • “Rich country, strong military”

  11. Japan = industrialized itself = no outside help • - Japan becomes an imperialist power = takes Korea as a colony

  12. Activity: (Choose one) Compare and contrast China & Japan’s response to Western influence. Prepare 5 interview questions for U.S. Commodore Matthew Perry. Create a comic strip of either the Sepoy Rebellion, Boxer Rebellion, or Japanese Samurai response. (include before, during, and after)
