  1. The UNITED! International Arts Festival. Skenderaj, Kosovo.   2. The Kosovo War 1999 • Skenderaj was a town in the centre of some of the worst fighting and atrocities when the Serb Yugoslav army decided to oust the Albanian Kosovar population from Kosovo. • The photograph shows a lucky shot through the chimney of the Skenderaj brickworks made by a Yugoslav army tank.

  3. The United Nations steps in... • Determined bombing by NATO eventually halted the Yugoslav army • The United Nations took over the administration of Kosovo • Bill Brookman is able to visit Albanian towns and Serb enclaves defended by KFOR, the United Nations peacekeeping force

  4. 13 volunteers meet in February 2002 in the UK to plan a festival.

  5. In July 2003 they arrive. • The stage is built in Skenderaj town centre.

  6. Banners are made by children in Kosovo, Holland and Rosebery School, Loughborough.

  7. The festival was halted during the reburial of local massacre victims. The bodies had been hurriedly buried on the spot, then reburied in Serbia to hide the crime. Now they were being returned to their original village.

  9. Reconciliation between Albanian Kosovars and Serbs was not possible in 2003 but the street festival was organised as part of the process of rehabilitation.

  10. Two days of fantastic local and international performances took place infront of the massive UNITED banner.

  11. A fire sculpture is destroyed in front of 7,000 people.

  12. A local boy is suspended above the crowd held by Jean-Marie Akkerman of Amphitheatre of the Arts. • Jean-Marie is HIV positive. • The festival intended to promote the acceptance of AIDS.
