Background • Mobile phone subscribers hit 4.1 billion worldwide in 2009 • Expected to reach 5.5 billion by 2012 • Kenya, 11,440,000 (2007) • Tanzania, 9,258,000 (2008) • Sudan, 7,464,000 (2007) • Ethiopia, 1,208,000 (2007) • Uganda, 4,195,000 (2007) Sharing Knowledge· Safeguarding Livestock · Improving Livelihoods

  12. Other Functions • Ordering products/services via SMS. E.g. to order CAHNET’s HOW TO video on hygienic goat milking, send an SMS with the code: DVD2 • Advertising or making important announcements to a target audience • SMS poll or survey using forms or simple coded text

Key Lessons • SMS is more effective if kept to the standard 160 characters. • System currently based on the Safaricom network, hence accessing it outside Kenya attracts extra roaming charges to CAHNET and the user • Allows SMS-email interface but not email-sms – these can be remedied through new software.
