  3. Laufmaschine 1817 • Draisine, also called Laufmaschine, from around 1820. The Laufmaschine was invented by the German Baron Karl von Drais in Mannheim in 1817. Being the first means of transport making use of the two-wheeler principle, the Laufmaschine is regarded as the archetype of the bicycle. The above Draisine was built with cherry tree wood and softwood

  4. Penny Farthing The Penny Farthing is also referred to as the 'High' or 'Ordinary' bicycle, and the first one was invented in 1871 by British engineer, James Starley. The Penny Farthing came after the development of the 'Hobbyhorse', and the French 'Velocipede' or 'Boneshaker', all versions of early bikes. However, the Penny Farthing was the first really efficient bicycle, consisting of a small rear wheel and large front wheel pivoting on a simple tubular frame with tires of rubber.

  5. Cross Frame Safety (1900's) Called a "Centaur Featherweight" and built in England. This cross frame safety weighing 26 lbs was very light for it's time and sold for 19 pounds 19 shillings in the UK at the turn of the century, when the average wage was 7 shillings per week.

  6. Ladies Roadster (1910) Manufactured by Halfords Cycles, Birmingham, U.K. A quality ladies bicycle, built with Halford parts and complete with skirtguard and basket.

  7. Motorised Bicycle (c 1914) Built by Birmingham Small Arms Co. Ltd. (BSA) in Birmingham, U.K. This bicycle has been retrofitted with a cycle motor, a self contained unit, designed to fit over and drive the front wheel, from the 1950's.

They also provide a popular form of recreation, and have been adapted for such uses as children's toys, adult fitness, military and police applications, courier services, and competitive sports.

Frame Main article: Bicycle frame Diagram of a bicycle The great majority of today's bicycles have a frame with upright seating which looks much like the first chain-driven bike.Such upright bicycles almost always feature the diamond frame, a truss consisting of two triangles: the front triangle and the rear triangle. The front triangle consists of the head tube, top tube, down tube and seat tube. The head tube contains the headset, the set of bearings that allows the fork to turn smoothly for steering and balance. The top tube connects the head tube to the seat tube at the top, and the down tube connects the head tube to the bottom bracket. The rear triangle consists of the seat tube and paired chain stays and seat stays. The chain stays run parallel to the chain, connecting the bottom bracket to the rear dropouts. The seat stays connect the top of the seat tube (at or near the same point as the top tube) to the rear dropouts.
