  4. Types of solids Crystalline solids fall into one of four categories.

  6. Ionic solids • Made up of a metal and non-metal • Hard and Brittle • High melting point of over 300 degrees C • Includes NaCl, AlCl3

  7. Molecular Solids • A molecular solid is a solid composed of molecules held together by relatively weak intermolecular forces, or IMF’s • Melting points are less than 300 degrees C

  8. Metals • Metals are ductile • Metals conduct electricity • Metals have luster • Metals are malleable • Why? • Metals have “delocalized” electrons.

  9. Network solids • Network solids are giant arrangements of matter in which atoms are covalently bonded together. You can think of network solids as giant molecules. • Molecular solids include Carbon as both Diamond and graphite.
